New Art Exhibit Features Katie Dobies’ Photos of Maine

This January and February, the art exhibit at Bar Harbor’s Open Table MDI community meal hub features the vibrant work of local photographer Katie Dobies. Come savor Katie’s photos while feasting on Open Table’s vegetarian meals on Tuesdays from 4-7 pm at 116 Cottage St.

After documenting her childhood with a Fisher Price camera in upstate NY, a few cameras later the adult Dobies continued her photography quest to capture the beauty of the natural world. Her love of traveling and new horizons led her to work as a flight attendant for nearly a decade. Layovers were opportunities to explore, take photos, and learn editing techniques.

A professional photographer, Dobies has worked closely with Saratoga Living Magazine in New York and Stratton Magazine in Vermont. Katie’s niche is working with businesses on their unique photography needs. A creative avenue Dobies uses to market her travel photos is stock photography. After initially selling photos via Istock/Getty images, she built her own website (stockphotoqueen.com) where 5,000 favorite stock photos are cataloged, available to license and download. This website is also home to her fine art photography marketplace and travel blog. Dobies still creates portraits, creates custom business branding photos, and photographs events.

But her first love is landscape photography—and her exhibit at Open Table focuses on Maine’s many landscapes. Dobies explained, “To me, the click of the shutter is like exultation in response to the beauty of the world seen through the lens. I love the way the sky reflects pastel hues on the water. Maine’s foggy weather is even more mysterious as it conceals and reveals, changing the view moment to moment.”

Dobies selected 18 of her favorite Maine photographs for this exhibit. The collection features giclee prints, metal prints, and beautiful fine art photography. And because she lives on MDI and attends Open Table’s weekly suppers, if you too come for dinner, you may meet Dobies and hear more about those gull lovebirds and the cloud-floating boats.
